Earthquake Proof Buildings
It is not easy to make a condominium that is fully earthquake proof. Even the best engineered building will surely suffer severe damage in the strongest earthquake. However, engineers should do their best to ensure that their buildings will stand long enough to make the occupants go out for safety during earthquakes.
Buildings that poorly perform during earthquakes are those that are made from masonry with poor quality like brick or concrete block. Generally, the walls are made of bricks that are stacked on one another and are held with a mortar. Roof is made of beams of wood that is laid across the wall top. The roof’s weight is carried down straight through the foundation’s wall. When earthquake occurs, this kind of building will get a sideways jolt in which the walls will tip over and will crumble while the roof will fall in on the occupants of the building just like a house of cards. Fortunately, the government is taking necessary steps to ensure that condominiums will comply with the proper codes of building to ensure the public’s safety.
